One of the most controversial figures in gaming, Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick, has officially resigned as of yesterday, December 29, 2023 after the mega-merger with Microsoft and the settling of a $50 million lawsuit with employees.
Kotick's reign lasted over 32 years, during which time the company became one of the biggest and most influential video games publishers on the planet.
His departure does not come as a surprise - Activision Blizzard had previously confirmed Kotick's would only continue his work with the company until the end of the year to ensure a smooth and seamless integration follow Microsoft's long-winded but ultimately successful $68.7bn acquisition.
It appears that no one within Activision Blizzard is set to replaced Bobby, the companies leadership will now report to recently-promoted Xbox Exec Matt Booty.
"I cannot adequately express the pride I have in the people who continue to contribute to our success and all those who have helped throughout my 32 years leading this company," Kotick wrote. "We are now part of the world's most admired company. That isn't an accident. - Bobby Kotick's final statement.
It is unclear what the former CEO will do going forward but many employees and consumers will rejoice at his departure from the company after years of allegations, lawsuits and controversy have marked this man at every turn. Hopefully the giant company now has a brighter future with him gone.
Bobby Kotick certainly won't be queuing up at the job centre on Monday as he is personally set to make a $400m bonus from the sale of Activision Blizzard to Microsoft so he doesn't go home empty handed.
